What is a frequency converter?
Frequency converters are electronic devices that allow you to control the speed of an AC motor .
Background: If electric motors or AC motors are operated directly from an AC voltage supply system, they can only use a fixed speed based on the number of poles and the supply frequency of the electricity system at that location.
However, if an application or production process requires a variable AC voltage (that is, controllable speed), frequency converters are used. These frequency converters can generate AC voltage of variable magnitude (output power level) and frequency from constant AC voltage.
How does a frequency converter work?
A frequency converter is connected to a motor to generate AC voltage that meets customer needs. The power system does not generate the frequency and voltage level at which the motor operates. Instead, the frequency converter assumes this task and controls the output frequency and output voltage.
What is the biggest advantage of the frequency converter?
It can be perfectly used to change the speed of an engine from practically zero to the nominal speed required in each case and have access to a significantly higher speed range. The motor torque remains unchanged. Plant operators can therefore adapt their drive technology to the necessary conditions at all times. A frequency converter also allows you to directly switch the direction of rotation. A simple control knob is enough to change the phase sequence. Then the AC motor rotates in the opposite direction.
What type of frequency converters are available?
There are two types of converters: current regulated and voltage regulated. Its functions differ in the following:
- Current Regulated Converters – Maintain the current to frequency (I / f) ratio at a continuously constant level and are suitable for use in high megawatt applications.
- In the low megawatt range, on the other hand, voltage regulated converters represent the latest technology. They continuously maintain the power to frequency ratio at a continuously constant level.
In a nutshell, the following cases are suitable for voltage regulated frequency converters: A rectifier converts the AC voltage supplied by the power supply to DC voltage. A DC link takes care after smoothing and stabilizing this DC voltage. Then the DC-AC converter on the motor side generates AC voltage with the required output frequency for the application. The resulting voltage-to-frequency ratio then produces the necessary motor speed. An integrated control that connects all the sets between them specifies or calculates the required speed.

Frequency converters are used in a wide variety of industrial sectors and applications . frequency converters are now indispensable in industrial production. In that sector, an infinitely variable or adapted speed enables optimized production processes plus there is the added benefit that speed control systems ensure energy efficient operations.
